Shadow IT: What Does It Take to Compete with AWS?
Recently there have been some eye-popping numbers released in regards to the tremendous public cloud growth and who specifically is leveraging the public cloud. At its most recent AWS:reinvent conference Amazon announced that revenue grew 81% year over year. That growth rate is also accelerating even as revenue increases. It is not just the fact that the public cloud revenue numbers are growing, it’s that the number of companies in the cloud is also growing. Nearly 57% of enterprises have workloads out in the cloud.
What is driving this growth? It is not just coming down from the CIO’s office to weigh the cost between on premises and off. There is also another trend driven by the individual application developers using workloads out in the cloud in order to test, build and run their applications. This is what we will focus on today: the rise of internal teams leveraging outside infrastructure without the knowledge or permission of the IT department, sometimes referred to as Shadow IT. How can infrastructure teams deliver the same experience developers are seeking elsewhere?
